The story
The Advance rotated the Game Boy into landscape and gave it shoulder buttons, a 32-bit processor and a widescreen display. Suddenly the handheld could run near-SNES-quality games, and the library exploded.
The original 'brick' AGB-001 is comfortable to hold but shares the old curse: a reflective screen with no light, famously hard to see. It is why the backlit SP that followed felt like such a relief.
For modders the AGB-001 is a superb base. A modern IPS kit and a decent shell turn it into arguably the best way to play the entire Game Boy, Color and Advance catalogue on original hardware.
